Where in Brazil Are You From?

Celebrating Brazilian Heritage in the UK

A Vision for Cultural Connection

Brazil is a country of breathtaking diversity: Indigenous traditions, Afro-Brazilian culture, immigrant legacies, regional festivals, music, literature, cuisine and ecosystems of global importance. Yet for many Brazilians living in the UK  this vibrant heritage is under threat....

Pressures of assimilation, economic hardship, language barriers and limited cultural infrastructure can gradually erode traditions and weaken intergenerational ties.

“Where in Brazil Are You From?” is a project in its first phase, led by the Brazilian Cultural Centre, with the goal of protecting and reinvigorating this heritage. Through dynamic exhibitions, performances, a digital archive, hands-on workshops, and storytelling, the project ensures that Brazil’s cultural heartbeat is not lost, but celebrated and shared for generations to come.

What We Will Do

We will explore Brazil region by region—Phase One will cover the North / Central-East / Northeast, and (if funding allows) Phase Two will spotlight the South and Southeast.

We aim to illuminate the legacies of writers, artists and cultural figures whose life stories capture the spirit of their homelands.

Our planned activities include:

  • Exhibitions and public talks that reveal life in Brazil beyond stereotypes
  • Workshops in literature, dance, music, visual arts to encourage creative participation
  • Film nights, performances, and screenings that bring Brazilian artistic voices alive
  • Heritage interviews with community members, preserved in an online archive and YouTube channel
  • Cultural festivals and closing events to celebrate the project’s impact and foster community bonds

Who Will Benefit

This project is intended for both the Brazilian diaspora and the broader UK public. We will prioritise access for groups that often face barriers to cultural participation:

  • Migrants and those navigating immigration systems
  • Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous voices
  • Older generations, women and economically disadvantaged communities
  • British-born audiences seeking deeper cultural discovery

All activities will be free or low-cost, bilingual (English/Portuguese), and hosted in accessible venues. A robust digital presence means that even those unable to attend in person can engage and feel part of the experience.

Why It Matters?

For Brazilians in the UK, this project offers a vital lifeline to heritage, identity and belonging. For British audiences, it invites a departure from superficial clichés to a richer understanding of Brazil’s cultural depth, resilience, and creativity.

We also aim to forge bridges, encouraging dialogue, celebrating diversity and enriching the UK’s cultural landscape. By creating a lasting digital archive, training volunteers, and cultivating partnerships with universities, schools, and cultural organisations, Where in Brazil Are You From? aims for enduring impact far beyond 2026.

Our Commitment

The Brazilian Cultural Centre  has a proven record of delivering cultural and social programmes in the Midlands. Our mission is to celebrate Brazilian heritage, promote social mobility and support Latin American communities across the UK.

Our team combines lived experience, professional expertise and strong networks to deliver inclusive, meaningful and sustainable cultural programming.

National Lottery Support

This project is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Thanks to National Lottery players, we are able to celebrate and preserve Brazil’s vibrant cultural heritage here in the UK — connecting communities, sharing stories, and ensuring that Brazilian traditions continue to inspire future generations.

Tatiana Woolley

" We are thrilled to have received this initial support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we can develop our plans to share Brazilian heritage in the East Midlands and beyond.”

Simone Dias

“Through Where in Brazil Are You From? we want to go deeper than a conventional cultural programme. Our aim is to build a platform where Brazilian heritage is celebrated with pride, shared openly, and embraced by all. For our Brazilian community, it is about reconnection, identity, and legacy. For British audiences, it is an invitation to discover Brazil beyond clichés—its art, literature, music, food, and stories of resilience. We hope people leave our events inspired, connected, and proud to belong to this shared cultural journey.”
